Peter Carpenter is an 89-year-old WWII veteran living in Lincolnshire, England. It’s quite an achievement that he’s still in his own home at this age, with a nurse to check in on him regularly.
Over the last few months he kept noticing bills missing from his wallet and started to wonder if he was finally losing his memory. He fretted a great deal about it, so to settle the matter, his family set up a hidden security camera in his living room. And when they watched the footage, what an upsetting surprise was in store for them!
It nearly broke Peter's heart to watch the video and realize that his nurse would rather pilfer cash from him than ask him for help if she needed it. As he says, it made him feel "very, very disappointed... devastated." The most important element between a patient and caretaker is trust. It's tough to recover from such a breach too. Fortunately his family’s action has protected him. Let's hope they find someone more trustworthy to look after him!
Don’t forget to watch out for the elderly in your life: they can be more vulnerable to being taken advantage of. Unfortunately there are people out there who are not willing to treat senior citizens with the respect and dignity they deserve.
